Officer involved shooting.
On 09/08/2012 at about 4:05 pm., the City of Hemet Police Dispatch Center received a call from a victim in the 500 block of N. Gilbert St. reference a suspect threatening to kill him. The victim was able to describe the suspect and advised the officers that the suspect may be armed with a knife. Responding officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him.
On 09/08/2012 at about 4:57 pm., Hemet Police Dispatch received a call from another victim at a different location in the 500 block of N. Gilbert St. advising that a suspect matching the previous suspect’s description was at his home, threatening the victim’s life with a knife.
Responding officers located a subject matching the suspect description and attempted to detain him. The suspect fled from the officers and a brief foot chase ensued. At one point, the suspect turned on the officers, armed with a knife and a hammer. Despite commands to stop and drop the weapons, the suspect aggressed the officers and they were forced to defend themselves. The officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect.
Medical aid was summoned for the suspect and he was transported to a local hospital. The suspect is expected to survive his injuries. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. The investigation is still ongoing and the names of the officers and the suspect are being withheld at this time.
