On 09/02/13 at about 4:40am, Hemet Police Officer Matthew Hiatt attempted a vehicle stop in the area of Thompson and Devonshire in Hemet. The driver, later identified as Marcus Antwane Smith, stopped the vehicle, exited, and fled on foot.
Smith ran through alleys and over fences, and eventually back to his vehicle. Smith then led officers in a 1.4 mile pursuit through city streets. Smith failed to stop at several stop signs and traffic lights before stopping in the 200 block of N. Mayflower Street. With officers behind him, Smith ran into an apartment where he was taken into custody.
