[ARCHIVED] Motorcycle Pursuit Ends in Arrest

Carl Mounts Hemet Police PD Arrest Motorcycle Pursuit

On 10-16-13, at about 7:27pm, Hemet Police Officer Ian Baily was on patrol in the area of 1700 W. Whittier Avenue when he spotted a high speed motorcycle in the area. Officer Baily got behind the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop for stop sign and speed violations. The driver, later identified as Carl Mounts, sped up and failed to yield to Baily's lights and sirens.

Mounts reached speeds of about 70 mph and failed to stop at several more stop signs. Baily initiated a pursuit at this point and they continued on W/B Garland and then onto S/B Kirby.

At this point, Hemet Police Officer Gonzalo Alvarez joined Officer Baily in the pursuit.

The pursuit continued at speeds around 70 mph onto W/B Stetson passing Sanderson. Riverside County Sheriff's Department's helicopter joined the pursuit and tracked the rider from the air. The pursuit continued into the county area and onto a dirt road portion of California Avenue.

At the south end of California, Mounts failed to negotiate a turn and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle slid out from under Mounts and he was thrown from the motorcycle. Mounts was taken into custody without further incident.

Mounts was transported to a local hospital for injuries received when he fell. No one else was injured. A records check on the motorcycle revealed it had been stolen out of the City of Murrieta. A records check on Mounts revealed he had two warrants for his arrest.

New charges sought against Mounts will be Felony Pursuit, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and Vehicle Theft.

After speaking with the victim of the stolen motorcycle, Officer Baily learned it was being stored in a large trailer at the time of the theft. The entire trailer was stolen in Murrieta with the motorcycle inside. The victim's are active duty military and were moving across the country to a new duty station. They had all of their belongings inside the moving trailer. The Hemet and Murrieta Police Departments are working together to locate the rest of the belongings that were in the trailer.

If anyone has additional information on Carl Mounts or a stolen trailer containing motorcycles and other property, they are urged to contact the Hemet Police Department at (951) 765-2400 or the Murrieta Police Department at (951) 304-2677. Callers may remain anonymous.
