On 11/28/2013, at approximately 12:29 pm, Hemet Police Officer Derrick Young was conducting foot patrol in the 100 blk of N. Alessandro. While in this area, Officer Young observed a male subject (Theodore Whitfield) whom Officer Young knew was a wanted felon. Officer Young attempted to stop Whitfield who immediately fled on foot.
Officer Young gave chase and requested the assistance of other officers. K9 Officer Derek Maddox arrived on scene and began to check the area. Officer Maddox located Whitfield, who was hiding near the area he originally ran from. Whitfield failed to give up and ran again. Officer Maddox and his K9 partner Rosco gave chase.
During the foot chase, Whitfield attempted to run into a home in the 100 block of N. Inez, however the occupants resisted his efforts to enter. As officers closed in, Whitfield grabbed a large patio chair and swung it at both Officer Maddox and K9 Rosco. The chair struck K9 Rosco in the head one time. Whitfield then threw the chair at Officer Maddox.
Whitfield was taken into custody by officers with K9 Rosco's assistance. Neither Officer Maddox nor K9 Rosco sustained serious injury during the altercation.
