On 12-06-13, at about 12:15am, Hemet Police Officers Matthew Hiatt and Douglas Klinzing were working a 2 man unit in the area of Cornell Street and Mayberry Avenue when they spotted two vehicles driving at excessive speeds.
The officers pulled behind the two speeders and one of the vehicles quickly turned north onto Cornell and accelerated away. The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop and the vehicle failed to yield. The vehicle was a white Ford Explorer. When the officers ran the license plate, they learned the displayed plate was registered to a Chevy Truck.
After reaching speeds of about 80 mph and not stopping for stop signs, a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued through a number of surface streets within the county area of Hemet. The vehicle finally stopped in the 41100 block of Torrey Pine Drive and a high-risk traffic stop was conducted.
The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and was identified as Cody Barnett, 27 years . The Explorer's VIN was checked and officers learned it was a reported stolen vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed that Barnett was in possession of about 3.8 grams of methamphetamine.
A records check revealed that Barnett is on Post Release Community Supervision. Barnett was arrested for felony evading, possession of the stolen vehicle, possession for sale of methamphetamine, and violation of probation.
