[ARCHIVED] Hemet PD Rolls Out Special Needs Registry

Hemet Police Special Needs Registry

The Hemet Police Department responds to hundreds of calls every year to assist care givers of people with special needs that are missing or need treatment for a certain health conditions. By registering your loved one with the Special Needs Registry the responding police officers will have easy access to information like; medical conditions, physical descriptions, fears, attractions, and emotional or physical triggers.

The Registry information is entered into our computer system and flags an address when we get a call for assistance from the location. The hope is that providing the information to the officers while they are responding will help solve the problem quickly and increase communication while keeping the special needs citizen and the officer safe.

Hemet Police Chief Dave Brown said, “We are pleased to provide this extra service to our community. The registry will definitely help us better serve the special needs of these great citizens and their families.”

Some examples of the conditions that may choose to participate in the program are Autism, Attention-Deficit Disorder, Schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, Down syndrome, deafness, and many others.

City of Hemet Mayor Pro Tem Shellie Milne said, “As a mother of a Down syndrome son, I am acutely aware of the positive impact this will have within the special needs community. I am so grateful and proud to live in a community where our police department recognized a need within the community and went above and beyond the call of duty to service their citizens.”

The registration instructions can be located on the Hemet Police web site. If you need assistance with the application we ask you to visit one of our three sub-stations where our volunteers will help you through the process. All the information in the Registry is kept confidential and will only be used by law enforcement when needed.
