[ARCHIVED] Hemet PD Safe Schools Reminder

HEMET POLICE SAFE SCHOOLS REMINDER

HEMET, CA - Recently, the Hemet Police Department has investigated several auto vs. pedestrian auto collisions; some of these occurring in or near school zones. The Hemet Police Department wants to remind parents and students to practice safe habits in school zones.

Additional officers have been assigned to these areas and will be actively looking for the following violations:

VC 21950 (a) – PEDESTRIAN IN CROSSWALK: Driver Yield to pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

VC 21950 (b) – PEDESTRIAN: Run or Stop in Marked or Unmarked Crosswalk; Suddenly walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is close enough to be an immediate hazard, or unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a crosswalk.

VC 21951 – CROSSWALK: Vehicle Stopped for Pedestrian; Overtake and pass vehicle from the rear at any marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

VC 21954 (a) – PEDESTRIAN NOT IN CROSSWALK: Pedestrian Yield to vehicles when crossing a roadway.

VC 21955 – JAYWALKING: Cross a roadway between two adjacent intersections controlled by traffic signal(s) and/or police officers without using a crosswalk.

VC 22350 – BASIC SPEED LAW: Drive vehicle on a highway faster than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, traffic conditions, and in no event at a speed that endangers the safety of persons or property.

VC 2815 – SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD: Disregard any traffic signal or direction by an authorized nonstudent crossing guard wearing official crossing guard insignia and who during course of his/her duties, is protecting any person crossing the street near a school, or while guard is returning to a place of safety.

Please take a few moments to talk with your children to explain the importance of pedestrian safety. Do not foster the belief that it can not happen to you. Take proactive steps to mitigate inherent dangers that naturally occur when vehicles and pedestrians occupy the same area.
